Born in San Juan, PR, I came to the states and lived in New Jersey. At age 11, it was a whole new experience for my younger brother and me. I went to school there and was president of the camera club in high school. I became part-owner of my own photo studio at age 18. At age 20, I joined the Army, attended their photography training and was sent to Southern Asia as a photographer. When I came back to the states, I chose to live in California. I wanted sunshine, not snow.
To earn a living for my family, I started in the aeronautical industry as a photographer – first for Ryan Aeronautical on government classified programs. There I practiced cinematography, earning recommendations for my work. Later I went to Hughes Aircraft in El Segundo, California where I worked in the photo lab and devised photo techniques to save the company money. I was the only photographer at Hughes to earn an award in the Zero Defects Program. In my “spare time” I shot weddings and family portraits on the weekend, logging hundreds of weddings over 12 years.
Then, it was time for me to try something different. I went to work for a professional photo lab as a Technical Sales Representative. I created new techniques for presentation media and invented a couple of innovative methods. I was one of the first to manually create color slides with color type on a black background. The process is now accepted as a standard for computer generated slides. I taught my new methods to my customers to help them with their presentation media. Along the way, I spoke nationally about media presentation techniques and earned merit awards from the Professional Photographers of America.
As time went on, I worked in several photographic medias, always looking for new ways to use the techniques I developed. Sometimes I worked for Professional photo labs, and later I went into business for myself, launching Effect Media Presentations with my wife Andee as my writer.
I’ve produced multi-media presentations for such companies as:
McDonald Douglas – Numerous slide shows and a slide presentation
Emerson Industrial Controls – Developed a canned presentation for investors. Developed and presented awards celebration entertainment presentation.
AMC-Renault – I developed and then ran a 12 project slide show for a live speaker at one of their dealer conferences.
Exxon – Coastal Commission Presentation
Brookstone Construction – photography for collateral and annual reports.
Hitco – Capabilities slide presentation
Teledyne Microelectronics – commercial photography, 24-projector, sound synchronized slide presentation, and a capabilities brochure
Computer Power Systems – For five years, we produced the slide shows that their reps used to sell their product nationwide (Computer Power Systems). At the end of that time, they sold the company to Emerson (making millionaires of the five men who started the company).
I have also helped smaller companies to market their products and services.
We have testimonials on file from these companies (and more) if you are interested in seeing them.
We moved from the Los Angeles are to San Diego in 1992 and I worked again for the photo industry here who were breaking ground in the new digital media. I researched, and then applied the new technologies to help my clients become adept and confident in the new digital age. I’m still doing that.
I have taught photo classes to professionals and amateur photographers. I worked for several semesters teaching UCSD extension classes in portrait and studio lighting. I now teach seminars and individuals in the art of portrait lighting, beach photography and Adobe Photoshop Workflows.
Now, with our children grown, and both Andee and I retired from corporate work, we have turned our attention to RCG and all of its divisions: Commercial Photography, Family Portrait, Pet Portrait, Seminars, Consulting and Pet Services (run by Andee). It’s nice to enjoy each other’s company while working together doing what we love.
